Terms of Use

The short version: MacQ is free, open source and provided as is, with no warranty. It talks to your monitor's own settings over DDC/CI, so please read section 5 before you use it. It is not made by or affiliated with BenQ.

These terms cover the MacQ application and this website at macq.birju.dev, both published by Birju Vachhani ("we", "us"). By downloading, installing or using MacQ, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use MacQ.

1. The software

MacQ is a macOS menu bar utility that controls compatible external monitors over DDC/CI, a standard the monitor already implements for its on screen menu. It runs entirely on your Mac. It is free of charge, and there is nothing to buy, subscribe to or register for.

2. Your licence

MacQ is released under the MIT License, and that licence, not this page, is what grants your rights to the software. It lets you use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell copies of MacQ, subject to including the copyright notice and permission notice in copies. The full text is in the LICENSE file.

Where anything on this page conflicts with the MIT License, the MIT License governs the software.

3. No affiliation with BenQ

MacQ is an independent project. It is not made, endorsed, sponsored or supported by BenQ Corporation. "BenQ" and any related marks belong to their respective owners and are used here only to describe which monitors MacQ works with. Using MacQ is not a substitute for your monitor's warranty or support, and BenQ is under no obligation to help with anything MacQ does.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to use MacQ to:

• Break any applicable law.
• Interfere with hardware you do not own or otherwise have permission to configure.
• Misrepresent modified versions as the official MacQ, or imply that we endorse them.

5. Hardware, DDC/CI and risk

This is the section worth reading twice. MacQ works by writing to your monitor's own configuration over DDC/CI. That is the same mechanism the monitor's physical buttons use, but it is worth understanding what it means:

• DDC/CI is implemented differently by different manufacturers and models. A command that is harmless on one monitor may do nothing, or something unexpected, on another.
• MacQ is developed and tested against a limited set of hardware. Your monitor may respond differently.
• Changing an input source will disconnect the display you are currently looking at, which is the intended behaviour, but can leave you needing the monitor's physical buttons to get back.

You use MacQ with your hardware at your own risk. We are not responsible for any misconfiguration, malfunction, loss of display output, or damage to a monitor, computer or other equipment arising from its use. If you are not comfortable with that, the safe choice is not to use MacQ.

6. System permissions

Some optional features ask for macOS permissions, currently Accessibility for media key routing. You choose whether to grant them, they can be revoked in System Settings at any time, and MacQ works without them (minus those features). What each permission is used for is set out in our Privacy Policy.

7. No warranty

MacQ is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non infringement. We do not warrant that MacQ will be uninterrupted, error free, compatible with your monitor, or that any defect will be corrected. This mirrors the disclaimer in the MIT License.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, in no event shall the authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages or other liability, whether in an action of contract, tort or otherwise, arising from, out of or in connection with MacQ or its use or other dealings in it. This includes indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, and covers loss of data, loss of profits and damage to hardware.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or liabilities, so parts of sections 7 and 8 may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

9. Support

MacQ is a free project maintained in its author's own time. No support, maintenance, bug fix or future release is promised or guaranteed. Bug reports and questions are genuinely welcome as issues on GitHub, and will be looked at as time allows.

10. Third party services

MacQ is distributed through GitHub, and this website is served by GitHub Pages. Your use of those is subject to GitHub's Terms of Service. We are not responsible for third party services we do not control.

11. Changes

MacQ is under active development, and features may be added, changed or removed between releases. These terms may also change: the current version always lives on this page with its date at the top, and every revision is visible in the repository's history. Continuing to use MacQ after a change means you accept the updated terms.
